Today’s 500 Hats Project hat is a pattern modification. I had a small amount of lavender yarn left and wanted to do something fun and girly with it.
The Spiralini Hat pattern by Jane Tanner fit the bill. However, the pattern’s size small to fit a 21-22″ head was too large for the amount of yarn available. So I downsized the pattern to a 16-17″ circumference. To do this, I counted the number of stitches needed for a pattern repeat and figured I could comfortably knit a hat that was 80 stitches around. I then calculated the ratio between the number of stitches cast-on and the increases so that I could do the increases as the pattern describes and end up with 80 stitches. I cast on 64 stitches and then followed the pattern essentially as written. It’s even almost as long as the pattern called for, so it has plenty of slouch.
